Please note that many of these terms are no longer in common use and are considered offensive by many people. They have been included for historical accuracy.

Concubinage
This term was used to describe sexual contact outside of wedlock.

Hindu
An old way of referring to people from India or people that we might now refer to as South Asians.

Kanaka
An old way of referring to native Hawaiians or people that we might now refer to as Pacific Islanders.

Malay
This term was used to describe people from the Phillipines, although it could refer to people that we might now call Southeast Asians.

Miscegenation
An old way of describing racial mixing, this term was also used to describe the laws that restricted interracial couples.

Mongolian
An old way of referring to people of Asian descent.

Mulatto
This term was once used to describe people of mixed race. The word is based on "mule" because they are the offspring of a horse and a donkey. Mules cannot reproduce, and the same was once believed to be true about people who were racially mixed.

Octoroon
An old way of referring to people that are seven-eighths white and one-eighth black.

Quadroon
An old way of referring to people that are three-fourths white and one-fourth black.
