Grand Rapids Public Museum
272 Pearl St NW
Grand Rapids, MI
United States

Event info from the organizers:

As part of West Michigan’s Loving Day Celebration, Ebony Road Players is proud to present another moving stageplay, “Alabama Story” by Kenneth Jones. This year, we’ve partnered with the Grand Rapids Public Museum to bring this compelling story to life.

As the Civil Rights movement is flowering, a controversial children’s book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit stirs the passions of a segregationist State Senator and a no-nonsense State Librarian in 1959 Montgomery, Alabama. A contrasting story of childhood friends–an African-American man and a woman of white privilege, reunited in adulthood–provides private counterpoint to the public events swirling in the state capital. Political foes, star-crossed lovers, and one feisty children’s author inhabit the same page in a Deep South of the imagination that brims with humor, heartbreak and hope. Inspired by true events.

Playwright Kenneth Jones characterized Alabama Story this way: “It’s a romance, a political thriller, a memory play, a workplace drama, a tearjerker, a comedy, a discussion about race, censorship and political desperation, and a rumination on the power of books. Most important, it’s a play about how we behave when we face terrible circumstances — how character is revealed in times of transition, change and crisis.”

Join us after the final performance of Alabama Story at Muse GR for an opportunity to meet the cast and participate in our signature talkback as we discuss the themes of the play and their relevance in our lives today.

We’ll talk about how laws and society have changed for the better. But also the issues and challenges that remain. De jure (by law) is one thing; de facto (in fact) is another. Join us as we pause to reflect on and celebrate the right to marry interracially — and the growing acceptance of interracial romantic relationships in general.

We also want to hear your ideas for future Meetups, including in-person events.

Dienstag, 13.

Darüber hinaus richtet sich der „LOVING DAY“ an Multiplikator*innen u.a.

„Sisi, Sex und Semmelknödel“ (© edition a 2020):

14:00-15:30 CEST (UTC +2)
La Monnaie De Munt
Place de la Monnaie – Muntplein
Brussels

Hosted By: Amoureux, vos papiers!, MRAX asbl et PAC Bruxelles

Info from the organizers:

Film: “Die 727 Tage ohne Karamo” Regisseurin: Anja Salomonowitz (2013)

Mag.a Gertrud Schmutzer, Beraterin bei FIBEL; Mag. Philipp Schmidtmayr, Jurist und Berater bei FRIDA; Mag.a Margarete Gibba, Obfrau von Ehe ohne Grenzen;

Moderation: Mag.a Sylvia Leodolter, Vorsitzende des Vereins FIBEL.
