When and Where is the Celebration?
Loving Day is celebrated in cities throughout the country in observance of the Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court Case of 1967, which struck down the criminality of interracial marriage in the United States. Ebony Road Players is a Grand Rapids theater company whose mission is to inspire, educate and engage cultures of our community with high-quality theater productions focused on the Black experience. Our Loving Day Celebration will honor multicultural and multiracial families, celebrate diversity, inclusion, and build a sense of belonging for all.
West Michigan's 2017 Loving Day Celebration will take place over the weekend, from FRIDAY JUNE 9 through SUNDAY JUNE 11 in Downtown Grand Rapids.
Friday June 9 at 7:30PM we kick off our weekend with "Giving Voice to Love: A multi-media/multi-racial celebration" at Ladies Literary Club (61 Sheldon SE). The event features film, music, dance and poetry.
Saturday June 10 from 10AM to 4PM we partner with Park Church community arts festival with food, vendors (if you would like to have a booth, click here), workshops, children's activities and a stage with music. Inside the church, there will be film viewings and a voice box to capture stories of our participants. The Mosaic Film Experience and Wrinkle Creative will provide event coverage throughout the day.
Sunday June 11 at 11:45AM at Park Church, the celebration will conclude with a FREE showing of the HBO documentary, The Loving Story, co-sponsored with Conversations at Park Church, lunch will be served and discussion will follow the film.
